In today’s POS market, consumers’ choice and tastes are evolving by the day, and end users, especially in the area of retail and hospitality, need to move with this evolution to stay competitive. When it comes to touch screens, some of the demands that end users are currently looking for, (both on the retail and hospitality sides) include technologies that are not only easy to use, but also take up minimal amounts of space, are environmentally friendly (“green”) and provide quick information. This is especially relevant and important as more consumers (and end users alike) want things easier, faster and more cost-effective. Therefore, this naturally increases the demand for touch screens that offer hardware and software equipped with quick processing components that are price-competitive.

To help meet these demands, J2 Retail Systems currently offers a selection of touch-screen computers within its product line; five are highlighted below, discussing the main features and functions of each:

J2 225

J2’s newest product is the J2 225, an exciting new generation of integrated touch screen computer, both elegantly compact and rich in design, giving an aura of modern elegance to any setting. This terminal uses the newer LED backlit 16:9 screen, providing a smaller physical footprint and offers powerful features and capabilities for the ultimate in Point of Service technology. Because of its smaller size and weight, and unique ability to fold flat for easy packing, the J2 225 will easily fit into a shipping carton no larger than the size of an average notebook computer; and it can even fold up in a briefcase (counter locking provision provided). This saves greatly on shipping costs and storage space.

J2 chose the new Intel Atom Cedarview processor to provide the longest product life possible and to obtain high-functioning performance and reliability. This new 32nm part has a higher speed with lower power consumption than other currently available Atom processors from Intel, at a similar price point. As part of the Intel embedded road map, the D2550 processor and chipset will be available for seven years from its release date.

The J2 225 offers a choice of touch screens – either the zero bezel five-wire resistive touch screen (TFR), or the multi-touch projected capacitive touch screen (PCT). Both screens are spill proof, dust proof, and can be cleaned with a standard glass cleaner. The resistive touch screens provide the same quick response and feel as the traditional touch screen used in most hospitality POS systems, with an anti-reflective plastic film surface and rated at 35 million touches per point. The robust and durable projected capacitive screen provides the new features of multi-touch and gesturing (or non-gesturing), now common in most smart phones, and will be ready for Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 release. The PCT has no known failure mode: it does not “wear out.”

The J2 225 unit comes standard with 2GB of memory (upgradeable); and a choice of either a 160GB hard drive or a 16GB solid state drive (other SSD/HDD capacities are available). Designed with four serial ports, four USB ports, video output, audio in/out, gigabit Ethernet, +12V output, HDMI/VGA/DVI rear support for promotion, a quick access HDD/SDD slot so that a drive can be easily changed in minutes, and much more, the J2 225 meets the most demanding requirements. Other options include MSR; Biometrics; RFID; and Secondary Display (LCD with Customer Display, 2x20 line Customer Display); and the unit can be used on a counter, or it can be wall-or VESA arm mounted, providing ease of viewing. The J2 225 is an excellent choice for most all POS applications in today’s market.

J2 680

The J2 680 is a powerful solution that provides the highest performance available today, in any AIO (all-in-one touch screen system) or PC unit. The terminal features Intel’s second-generation Sandy Bridge Quad Core Processor technology, up to a Core i7 CPU plus it exceeds the 4GB ceiling on DRAM to operate up to 16GB of memory. The J2 680 is suited for today and tomorrow’s intensive database POS software needs, and it will grow for new POS functionality as needed, such as Microsoft‘s pending release of Windows 8.

The J2 680 offers a zero-bezel touch screen design, which provides a sleek modern look, with increased functionality that supports any environmental condition. With a projected capacitive touch screen, this is the most robust available. A resistive 5-wire touch screen option is available, both screens provide spill and dust resistance. The J2 680 has extensive powered USB and serial ports allowing for less cabling and the ability to power additional peripheral devices from the POS terminal without additional power supplies. The J2 680 is ideal for retail or hospitality environments, it changes the game on the need for large PC touch screen/separate components, which free up the counter top in retail.

J2 650

The J2 650 is the company’s historic milestone. In 2008, it was the fastest AIO ever introduced. It could be configured as a low-power fan less thin client terminal, a mid-range thick client, or even a Dual Core high speed server with RAID. Product versatility and reliability are key strengths when it comes to the J2 650. With more than 35,000 sold and still going strong, it represents the largest, most popular J2 unit ever installed. It features the signature “all-in-the-head” design and can be mounted on the counter top or wall- or pole-mounted. This was the first J2 design to take advantage of the VESA standard.

The entry level 650 is equipped with a 2.6 GHz Dual Core Celeron processor, extending to a Core 2 Duo 3.06 GHz CPU. The J2 650, like its new counterpart, the J2 680, offers a “Green Mode”, this mode allows the fan to be turned off, reducing the power consumption by 25% and the overall carbon foot print to save energy and reduce electrical costs for the operator.

J2 630

The J2 630 Dual Core 1.8 GHz Atom currently holds the position as the #1 volume unit, closely surpassing (recently) the 650 as J2’s top selling product. It is feature rich and versatile, making it a very cost effective alternative and ideal in hospitality environments. Again, fan less and silent (a J2 design goal) resilient as well as resistant to dust, spills, grease and sea air. The unique design feature is its ability to upgrade or change the motherboard, offering the lowest cost of ownership for the end user. The J2 630 offers all the muscle of a “work horse,” combined with the sophistication of noise-free operation and stylish looks. It fits discreetly into most hospitality settings and is therefore perfect as a replacement terminal for older technology where more performance and reliability is required.

J2 615

The J2 615 takes credit for the first Intel Atom design introduced to the All-in-One (AIO) market, and was the first to offer an 8GB Solid State Drive (SSD) as standard storage. This convection cooled fan less 8GB solid state design was the first to eliminate all moving parts from the system.

The J2 615 continues to this day to be the #1 choice for entry level systems in POS. It set the standard for J2s use of Solid State technology and fan less designs. Now J2 is using Intel’s latest processing technology and Microsoft’s Embedded software offerings, which provide elegant Point-of-Service solutions for an ever-demanding market.
