An example is a new app from Granbury Restaurant Solutions (GRS, pictured left) that lets diners place orders via iPads mounted as self-service kiosks. Consumers place their order, can respond to program upsells, and then complete the entire ordering process via credit card payment. At the same time, the software communicates the transaction to the POS database, instantly updating inventory and capturing customer information.
Aladino's Pizza in Antioch, Calif., has found GRS’s app for iPad kiosks appealing to customers. Besides cutting wait time, the app involves consumers in the order process, according to owner Matthew Fosenberg. “Our target market customer already has a smartphone and finds the easy, graphical interface of the kiosk to be very convenient to use,” he stated in a recent press release from GRS. “Plus, it frees up our staff to spend more time concentrating on food prep, so we can make sure the food is perfect.”
Twisty Treat, an ice cream shop franchise with stores in Missouri and Florida, is using a similar app from Revel Systems. This point of sale iPad kiosk has proven to be very user-intuitive, according to Corey Balzer, president of Twistee Treat USA. “I suspected there would be a learning curve with the iPad station,” he reported, “but users just walked right up to the iPad kiosk and started ordering as if they had done it before.”
With Revel’s iPad kiosk app, customers order and pay for their ice cream with a credit card using an iPad kiosk. If it’s a cash sale, the kiosk holds the sale via the POS system, and the customer pays a Twistee Treat employee. Customers receive an email receipt prior to receiving their order. Revel Systems’ app can be completely customized for payroll, inventory tracking, web ordering and more.
Lisa Falzone, co-founder and CEO of Revel Systems, explains that the platform is targeted toward chains and restaurants that have at least $500,000 in yearly revenue. Current users of the platform, which was named Best iPad Business App for 2011, include Popeye's Chicken in Georgia; Illy Coffee and U-sushi in San Francisco; Camille's Sidewalk Café in Oklahoma; the Beautiful Brands International umbrella, including Camille’s Sidewalk Café, Dixie Cream, FreshBerry Frozen Yogurt Cafe and Rex’s Chicken.
