The Pantry, Inc. and its Kangaroo Express brand have introduced a POS (point of sale) option at selected stores in Raleigh and Durham, North Carolina to test consumers’ hunger for convenience and speed in gas station purchases.
Recognizing that many of their customers who purchase fuel at the Kangaroo establishments never enter the store, the company has installed beverage vending machines directly on the fuel pump islands. Customers pull in and gas up, then are prompted to add a cold beverage from the adjacent machine. A swipe of their credit or debit card, and off they go, cold drink in hand, without ever entering the store.
The company behind this innovative POS approach is Vendgogh, whose vending systems are integrated with the Kangaroo Express POS system. Retail POS benefits include the ability to optimize the use of space on the existing fuel pump island and the opportunity to create incremental revenue and profit with high yield gross margin products for the gas station owner.
Additionally, the company points out, there is no negative impact on in-store sales, as many of the customers who buy gas never enter the store at all. The gas station has, in effect, created a new POS zone at the pump.
Vendgogh provides a control unit at each convenience store location that integrates with existing POS systems to make the customer transaction at the fuel pump simple and easy. The system, which is transparent to store personnel, captures all vending transactions and communicates them to the Vendgogh systems to complete the customer transaction.
“This is another option we are testing to serve our on-the-go guests,” said John Fisher, senior vice president of marketing, merchandising and restaurant operations at The Pantry and Kangaroo Express. “We strive to offer our customers control through accountability and security, cost savings, convenience and customer service. The fuel island POS for beverages fits well into our corporate mission.”
