Electronic Shelf Labels, or ESLs, are small electronic devices that come in various shapes and sizes that are used as a replacement to traditional paper based shelf labels. ESL units come in various sizes for shelving from tablets for produce. ESL units are a relatively new technology development. They have improved with the usage of interchangeable batteries which increase the savings that businesses gain from their implementation. These units connect to a central computer that is on location through wireless technology (such as infrared).
All kinds, whether they are dry goods or grocery stores. There are a number of different units that are available, including tags, larger labels and even tablet sizes. These units can display the name of the product, product price, whether the item is on sale or not and units of measurement. With all these various ESL units all kinds of businesses can use the technology.
With ESL, businesses no longer have to purchase supplies to make labels. Costs are further reduced since employees can quickly change prices from the office on multiple products without having to go to the shelves themselves to replace the labels. When properly implemented, businesses can set up a network in which the POS system communicates with various distributors. Using this communication system, stores can get the latest pricing and establish their product prices on margin. With ESL units, whenever there is a price change the business receives the update, and the point of sale system will automatically update the ESL units.
There are number of different ESL units available for businesses to choose from. It is important that business owners ask the vendors whether the POS system proposed to them is capable of supporting ESL. Many point of sale systems do not, and others require that a third party software program is used to manage the ESL software.
