Mini Case Study: Small Retail Chain Boosted with One Step Retail Solutions


Lou Lou Boutique initially launched their 2 locations in the DC-area “mini-chain” in 2004 and this “dangerous obsession” has expanded to 14 locations across the greater DC area.

As this DC retailer rapidly expanded, they found their capabilities were stifled and they needed to have the ability to get a comprehensive overview of their inventory and product movement. Working with One Step Retail Solutions since 2012, Lou Lou aimed to create a seamless inventory system to manage their multiple locations for maximized profits and prepare for further expansion. Refinery 29 raves, Lou Lou has “conquered” the District.

After searching the available point of sale options for multiple-store apparel retailers they bumped up from QuickBooks Point of Sale to NCR’s CounterPoint.

F Street Store Manager, Ruby Szilagi, recalls the implementation of NCR CounterPoint with One Step Retail Solutions as their partner. She offered some sage words of advice to her fellow retailers. “Words of wisdom: STICK WITH IT, don’t drop it. One Step is so good at helping you. They are there with you every step of the way, day and night.” She also noted, “it was bumpy to begin with, the implementation stages, what servers worked, what didn’t, because we have so many stores and the One Step Retail team is great, they always call us back, they are always teaching us.”

I had the pleasure of speaking with Ruby and getting the “inside scoop” about Lou Lou’s upcoming expansion and how NCR’s CounterPoint has helped make it all possible…

One Step: What is your favorite thing about CounterPoint’s use in-store?
Ruby: “I love the hot buttons, so you don’t have to type anything, makes it really easy when you have a line.”

One Step: What is the most useful thing about CounterPoint as a store manager?
“I think the most useful thing, being a manager, is the ability to truly control your inventory. What you have, what you don’t have, what’s traveling to your store. It is an easy tracking system.”

One Step: How have you been able to use CounterPoint to detect and reduce theft?
“Being in one of the city stores we do have a lot of theft, [CounterPoint] is a good way to control that. I recently moved the watches once I found that was a big target. Additionally, I am able to realize exactly what was missing and file a report. It is really helpful for merchandising so you can keep an eye on everything.”

The newest location will be opened in the Washington Square building on 1742 L Street. This new location will sit one block off Connecticut Avenue in Downtown DC, with close proximity to Dupont circle, Foggy Bottom and K Street. Nearby stores include Nordstrom Rack, Victoria Secret and Ann Taylor.

The second new store will be opening on 14th Street NW, in the heart of the U Street corridor. “With the resurgence of nightlife, the renovation of many of the historic buildings and the opening of many restaurants and retail, we are excited to become part of this vibrant new the neighborhood,” said Ben Wegdam, owner of Lou Lou.

Both stores are expected to be open for business this summer. “With the addition of these two new locations, we expect to be able to serve a new customer base in the heart of the District.” – Ben Wegdam.
