Technology Stops Imposters at Point of Sale
Detecting counterfeit products at the point of sale is a feasible solution to a global piracy problem for distributors and businesses.
The Organic Electronics Association is promoting the universal use of RFID tags to prevent knock-off items from slipping through the cracks. In addition to the many benefits of using RFID, the tags can be scanned with a smartphone with RFID scanning capabilities to verify whether the products they are attached to are legitimate from the manufacturer or not. Another technology being explored is the use of organic light emitting diodes (OLED). When a package has been unopened, the OLED surface on the package will light up while an opened package would display a warning signal. The mission to prevent fraud and protect businesses from receiving pirated packages is a large feat, but technology can assist companies in the fight.
